Final blog post

The book, "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls is about Jeanette growing up with parents  with the strangest parenting styles. She has to deal with a dad who is a drunk and with a mom who only pays attention to her "art career". Her parents let their children go wherever they want to go, and do whatever they want.  Jeanette learns that she has to grow up fast. Throughout the book Jeanette's feelings about her dad change. In the beginning she has faith in him. As the book progresses and starts to end however, she loses her faith in him.     

         In the beginning when she was around 3 years old she was cooking hot dogs, and she burned herself, and instead of being a responsible parent, her dad convinced her to get out of the hospital and face her fear, and cook hot dogs again. This is why she had faith in him. She learned from her dad to face her fears (page 9). When they lost her when she fell out of the car, Jeanette knew her dad would notice and come back for her, and he did. This shows how she had faith in her dad(page 30). Jeanette thought her dad might end wind up with a drinking problem because her father’s mother was very mean and forceful, and he began drinking (page 147). That is how she had faith in the dad despite his own terrible upbringing.

          In the middle and then by the end of the book, Jeanette started to lose faith in her dad.  Her dad promised Jeanette he would do anything for her for her birthday no matter how hard it was, and she asked him to quit drinking. He tried to keep his promise, but he did continue to drink  and he disappointed her (page 127).

Jeanette had a problem with her uncle, and even though no one believed her, she was telling the truth. Her uncle touched her in inappropriate places. I see her reasoning on not going back to her uncle’s house, even if she has to skip showering, because she would have had to shower at his house, and she was afraid to because of his touching her. (page 187). I see why she lost faith in her dad because he did not believe her or protect her from her uncle.

            I felt that the book, "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls is about Jeanette growing up with parents with the strangest parenting styles. They all learned that they had to grow up fast. Throughout the book Jeanette's feelings about her dad changed. In the beginning she had faith in him. As the book progresses and starts to end she lost her faith in him. I showed how and why she lost faith in her dad. Her dad died as a result of all his drinking in the end. Once he had died, she realized he had loved her, but that he had not taken care of her properly, the way a parent should.  Despite the terrible job her parents had done in raising them, she and her siblings went on to lead successful lives.

Nonfiction response

                  In the article, "No more Pay Phones" the main idea is about how London's famous phone booths aren't going to be because everyone has a cellphone. The article goes on to talk about turning this famous phone booth into a couch. The article talks about how no one uses phone booths anymore, but we should still use them. The author taught me that we use cell phones a lot.


                 The author wants me to feel that even though no one uses phone booths doesn't mean that we can't use them because we could turn them into something else. According to the article," Just because no one uses the phone booths doesn't mean they are worthless."  This makes me think we should keep these phone booths and that we could use for something since they are worth something.


                  The authors bias is to keep the famous booths since they are worth something. The author thinks that we should turn them into something and I agree. According to the author, "losing the red telephone box would be a shame." This would be very hard to not see every day according to the author. It would be hard to get used to not seeing. We should keep them.


                  To finish off, this article has taught me to keep the telephone booth. If I were living there I would keep them. "Incident" reading response

            “I saw the whole of Baltimore From May until December: Of all the things that happened there That’s all that I remember.”  “Incident” by Countee Cullen is about racism, and how bad it feels to be made fun of.  It is not fair and you will remember this forever.  One theme is that no one should be treated differently.  This is shown in rhyme and by the speaker.  

            The poem makes it seem as though making fun of someone is not that bad, by using rhyme and making it sound fun.  “Now I was eight and very small, And he was no whit bigger, And so I smiled, but he poked out His tongue and called me “Nigger”.”  This shows that being mean is not fun.  The boy it was done to was really upset though. He thinks he is less and thinks his race/black skin color is bad.  The boy being mean probably does not know what that word means.  He probably heard his parents or someone else saying it.  The boy who said it may have been sad or upset because he might be going through something in his life which he is sad or upset about, and he is taking it out on someone else.

            People think that other people are weird. “I saw a Baltimorian Keep looking straight at me.”  People look at each other because they think they are different.  People look at each other because they are upset, or because they don’t care.  They may do it to relieve stress or because they are curious.  They think that someone else is weird just because they are different.

            Some people think that other people look different, so they are weird.  However, people should think that people that look different are unique.  “Incident” is similar to “I, too” because they both are about people being treated differently or badly because of their race.  Why can’t people be nice even if someone is different?

       As I was waking up in the morn on the Sunday when i was off from school I get up and feel weird. My stomach hurts. I try to go to the bathroom! I WAS FINE! I went through til 4ish. We got to go to the movies. Then I go to the bathroom again! I see some red blood on me and on my undies. I go aha great IT is my first horrible period. That explained my stomach problem! My dad walks out of the bathroom with my brother. After my brother walks away I tap my dad. He asked me what! I told him that I need pads! He said aahh! That explains why you have been weird! he Then tells his girlfriend in Spanish since my brother was around. My mom said your a young lady now and I said uh huh. and everything was fine.

                 Did you ever want to start your life over again? Well idk if you did but Adam has! Have you ever felt love for some one? IDK but Adam has! The book," Where She Went" by Gayle Foreman is about a girl named Mia who meets her old friend Adam( the main character) and he wants to start his life all over again! Mia comes back like nothing happened in High School. She forgot she just left Adam for Julliard!

                   Adam wants to leave! If he leaves he doesn't think about what he would be leaving! He would be forgeting everything. He would have to forget his life, Oregon, his band, every little thing in his life. His life was getting harder with Mia ariund. He wantes to leave because Mia was around! " I need to leave oregon! I need to leave everything!" which means he would be leaving his life! All of this would mean he is starting fresh from the beginning!

                    Love for Adam is very hard! Mia doesn't see how hard Adam is trying to get back together with her. Mia doesn't remember it at all. Adam has been fighting for Mia for a while now. Adam is with Mia at certain times in the book and Adam feels like it is the perfect day! Everyday is hard for him because Mia is around! "i am alone with Mia and all i see is her and I in the room alone! It is perfect!" which means whenever he is alone with Mia it is perfect. Love is hard. Someone can say it is perfect but the other person doesn't see it.

                         The article "Can Facebook Spot a Bad Romance" the main idea is about the pros and cons of Facebook relationships. In the article the author talks about the number of friends you share with your boyfriend/girlfriend can help  your relationship. The author goes on to talk about the difference between spread out friends and mutual friends. The author taught me that Facebook can be bad for relationships.

                       The author wants me too feel that if i get a Facebook  and have a boyfriend then i should have many mutual friends. According to the article, "Researchers found that couples who share only one group of friends  are more likely to break up then couples who share multiple mutual friends"  This makes me think that if i had a boyfriend i should share all my friends with him/.

                      The author has no bias because he is ruling for both sides. if i were to choose which relationship would last longer, I would choose more mutual friends. " The spread-out friends indicate a deeper commitment in each other lives." This would be hard.  would no want to do that would you?

               to finish off, this article has taught me to have a relationship status onine with mutual fends. Is this story unfair? Why or Why not?

 

            Would you like to live in a society where they tell you everything you must do and can’t do, and where your every move is regulated? I sure wouldn’t. You can’t choose when you can do life changing events! You have a matching ceremony where almost everyone is freaking out because you have no idea who you will be matched to. Cassia was freaking out! There is quite a comparison between our society and their society. “Matched” by Ally Condie shows us how we are so lucky to have such a fair society!

 

            In “Matched” by Ally Condie, not one person gets to choose when they do life changing events.  In the society they get jobs. When they get the job they don’t go to school. They watch movies about society. They are matched after or on their 17^th birthday. You must die on your 80^th birthday and have a ceremony on your 80^th birthday. “Today is Sunday. It is Grandfather's eightieth birthday, so he will die.” This means that since her grandfather is officially turning 80 today it is the day he will die. You know you are dying when you turn 80. This is so unfair! Yu should not know when you are dying! You shouldn’t expect your death!

 

            In “Matched” by Ally Condie, Cassia is scared about her matching ceremony.  Cassia is about to have her matching ceremony. She is scared which is normal. Xander her best friend also has his matching ceremony, but is not scared which is unusual. Who will Cassia's match be? Who will Xander's match be? “‘Your match is here today!’ ‘Xander Thomas Carrow!’ ‘I can’t believe it!’”  Xander and Cassia could get married this means! Whoa! This is amazing! She knows him so well! Cassia may not want to marry Xander because she doesn’t want to ruin their friendship!

 

            In “Matched” by Ally Condie is really unfair, where as in our society we have a lot of freedom! In our society we can practically do anything. In their society they can practically do nothing. “‘Where is Bren?’ I ask Xander. ‘I didn’t tell you? She got her job so she doesn’t go to school.’” After a certain amount of time you don’t go to school because you have a job. It shows how unfair it is because suddenly you are pulled out of school when you don’t expect it and you suddenly leave your friends.

 

            This text made me realize we are so lucky to have what we have; we have all of this freedom. You can’t choose when you can do life changing events!               In the book, "When you reach me" by Rebecca Stead people like the main character Miranda have power over poor people like the minor character " The Laughing man. I think the main character should focus on being nicer to him. The man who is less superior should try to be more superior. Therefore,the main character Miranda has power over poor people like the minor character " The Laughing man." 

             Miranda is being mean to the poor guy. She is acting all high classy to him all because he is a low class guy. He should act as if he is more superior. He should should try to get a job. Miranda is around my age and got a job. He is a older guy, which is a normal age to work for money, so he should get a job so maybe could become more higher class and have a bed at least, instead of sleeping under the mailbox. The man even acts as if he is less superior. Who is less superior? should not be a question. No one should be superior of another person.Therefore, poor people should be recognized.

             " OMG!!!!!!!! Not that movie!!!! The Wizard of Oz movie is out Yay!!!!!!!!!!" I said when I was 3 , 4,or 5 years old. i was very excited to see this movie. My mom was excited to. My mom loves Judy Garland And Judy Garland was playing the main part in this movie. I wanted to see it because it was my type of movie. It was a movie for kids. I watched every commercial and practically watched the movie already. My mom said that she thought it looked cute, but I said it was the best movie in the universe.

              My favorite movie is The Wizard of Oz. I still Watch The Wizard of Oz now.I have loved it all my life.I love it because it reminds me of how important my family is. I love it because it has good songs, has good fantasy, and a sad beginning, but a happy, awesome ending.  It is relevent to my life today because it reminds me how important family is. I will always love my family no matter what. My grandma lucy watched it with me. My grandma Lucy is dead and this reminds me of what I did with her, I miss with all of my heart. I miss her a ton.And when I watch this movie I remember her. I feel like I am sitting right next to her when I watch  this movie. My mom watches  it with me. My mom loves it because Judy Garland is in it  and has always loved Judy Garland.

 All over the world, parents want to take away the rights of teens and young adults to read certain books which they feel should be banned.  One of these books is "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky.  In my opinion this book should not be banned from a Middle School Library. "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" is about a teenaged boy of 14, named Charlie, who is only about a year or less older than we are.  He doesn't know about some of the bad things in life like suicide, bullying, rape, drugs, and many other things, and he learns about them.  This tells us why we need to read books like this, and understand about these things, and how and why they happen.  Books like this should not be banned because they teach us about important life lessons such as gay.

          Banned books teach us many lessons about real life. I think the book," The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky teaches us many of these types of lessons, and the lesson I am going to talk about from this book is one of these types of lessons.  In the book, Charlie is introduced to people who lead different lifestyles.  Charlie became very friendly with a boy named Patrick ,and Charlie was being "too friendly."" Patrick started kissing me on the lips and I let him.  I didn't like it but I let him do it because I was being a friend."(The Perks of being a wallflower 160)  This means that Patrick is gay.  Although Charlie was not comfortable with this because he liked girls and not boys, and he was not gay, he was not sure what to do about this situation.  This is an important lesson for teens. Teens and young adults will confront situations where they will need to figure out how to deal with things. Things like this occur often with no previous warning, and teens need to know about various situations and on how to confront them.

YA books are dark  and gruesome. This was from an article opposed to young teens reading many books that people feel should be banned.  “Patrick just broke up with his boyfriend, and he was very sad.  He had no money. He started kissing Charlie and he did not realize it."(The Perks of being a wallflower 160)   This would be inappropriate according to some of these parents because kids may not know what gay means.  Some parents may not want their children exposed to things like this. The article "Darkness Too Visible" by Meghan Cox Wurdon states that YA books are dangerous.  They are dark and detailed and very gruesome.  Certain books that kids love such as “Shine” and “Tears” have material that kids should not be exposed to.

             Banned books are based on real things which teach us real lessons. Teens have to learn about situations in life as part of the process of growing up.”(The banned books we have loved Jen Doll) Kids want to read these banned books more when we ban them.”  This means that kids get more interested in knowing why these books were banned.
                 
           We shouldn't ban books.If we ban books teens will not be aware of all these problems in life.Banned books are appropriate for young teens.  They should not be banned.We should put a rating system like the movie theaters. I feel that an all-out ban is not fair or appropriate for all teens. These books teach us things that we will learn later on in life, and a classroom setting can provide a valuable place for teens to discover and learn about topics which will help them to better understand and discuss topics which might otherwise be confusing or scary. It can provide a safe environment for such discussions. They teach us lessons on real things. Do you think about what you are going to do to teens when you ban books? Whoa!!!! My childhood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        I am at my grandparents house. I sit down. Grandma is not there. Grandpa, mom ,and dad are the only ones there. I am in the kitchen of my grandma Lucy. I sit down thinking something happened to my grandma Lucy.  My parents were not acting normal. I notice that my grandpas face is red like he had been crying. I ask mom, is grandpa ok ?  Mom tells me yeah he is fine.
         "Where is grandma?" I ask loudly, and scarily.
           " Um well hon the thing is something happened to grandma Lucy, that you would not understand at your age." mom states!
            "JUST TELL ME,TELL ME PLEASE I DON'T CARE HOW UPSETTING IT IS. I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO MY GRANDMOTHER!" I scream! My mom tells me she is in the hospital  and has a disease called Cancer!
           " Will she be okay?" I ask. I hope so my mom tells me.
          " Can I see her mom?" I plead! My mom tells me NO she is in very bad condition. I do not want you to see her honey.
             " When can I see her?" I ask. In a few days my mom tells me!!! When I see her I hug her, kiss her and start crying.Then I start dancing. I have always loved dancing.
                                              A FEW MONTHS LATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
               My mom calls me into the other room.
                " Hon I have bad news." mom states.
                  "What has happened mom?" I ask.
                    " Grandma" is all she tells me!!

            At the end of this book, "Can't Get There From Here" Maybe loses all of her street friends, because the either died, or found out they have a family and moved back home, and Maybe was the last one left. The book, "Can't Get There From Here" by Todd Strasser  is about a group of street kids who either left their family, their family made them leave or they don't know who their family is. Maybe the main character helps her friend tears go back to her family. The theme of this book is You can't trust your true family always.

            To begin, one of maybes moms friends said oh i am fine when she was still addicted to drugs.Rainbow ended up living with foster parents since her mom was addicted to drugs. Rainbows mom replaced Rainbow with drugs. This was so upsetting to Rainbow that Rainbow committed suicide.This shows why you can't trust family. Rainbows mom started taking drugs to make herself happy. Then Rainbows dad divorced Rainbows mom.Rainbows mom gets addicted to drugs. They put Rainbow in foster care for awhile up until Rainbows mom got a hold of herself. Rainbows mom said I am fine now, so Rainbow returns to her mother. Her mom didn't get a hold of herself so Rainbow had to live with foster parents because her mom replaced rainbow with drugs. Rainbow was so upset she committed suicide. Therefore, Rainbow could not trust her family.

          To continue, 2moro, one of Maybes friends had many problems also. 2moros mom died when 2moro was 2. Her grandma and aunt took care of 2moro.  Her aunts boyfriend touched 2moro in inappropriate sexual places. when 2moro tried to tell her aunt and grandma they said she was lying. This kept on happening so she ran away. This shows you can not trust your family. 2moro had a mom who died and her dad was unknown. Then her grandma and aunt took care of 2moro. They did not really love her.  when they left. they left her alone with her aunts boyfriend, who always touched 2moro in inappropriate sexual places. This disturbed 2moro. When her grandma and aunt were there and he was not she told them. They said she was lying. She ran away. Therefore you can't trust family.

how character changes

The character OG is very mean in the beginning and starts to change in the middle. In the book “Can’t Get There from Here” by Todd Strasser is about homeless kids who are on drugs and can’t do anything about it because they don’t have any family. I am going to tell about OG’s problems and how he dealt with them, and what it shows about him.

            OG has many problems, and I am going to tell you what they are. OG can’t behave like a normal kid, because he is really mean. OG must have a disease, because he is really mean to his friends who are his family now. He is mean to maybe a lot. Then he started being mean to Maggot and Tears. He called them his “family” when he told them to leave! That is not a family. He made fun of his family.

            OG dealt with his problems by learning to keep quiet when he is really in a mood to make fun of his family. OG is learning to be a nice person. He is treating his family like a real family now. He is nice to Maybe, Tears and Maggot. That is a real family. He doesn’t make fun of his family again. It shows that he can change a lot in so little time.

Reading response on summer reading book.

            "Make Lemonade" by Virginia Euwer Wolff is about  a girl named LaVaughn  who is  in
Junior High but is determined to get into college already. She needs the money though. She responds to an ad for a baby sitting job, but her mom says don't do it. Then her mom reluctantly says yes. she then meets seventeen year old single mother named Jolly with two kids by different fathers. The kids names are Jilly and Jeremy. As she helps Jolly take care of them jolly's life turns out great. LaVaughn teaches the kids many lessons they need to know for the future, and helps jolly with many things.
              
          La Vaughn decides to start saving up for college. She thinks she should get a job. she looks at posters at her school and her friends go for the ones that are cleaning jobs. LaVaughn goes for the one that says desperately need a babysitter. Before calling she asks her mom. Her mom responds NO!. Then she tells her mom it is to save up for college. Her mom reluctantly says yes. Then she immediately calls Jolly and gets the job. every day after school she took care of the kids up until 5 pm. she potty trained Jeremy, and got jilly to walk. Then she helped jolly gradate college. she got 40 a day. Therefore she was a good baby sitter.                                                                             


               Therefore,  "Make Lemonade" by Virginia Euwer Wolff is about  a girl named LaVaughn  who is  in Junior High but is determined to get into college already.Her mom lets her babysit Jeremy, and  jilly.Then she helped jolly graduate college. I loved this book a lot. I would read it again.
